WORK has started on Essex Water’s £16m scheme to upgrade Taunton’s ageing mains network. The project involves laying a new main to replace a pipe described as “many years old”.
It is the first section of work being carried out as part of Operation Clean and Clear which is expected to last around two years and will involve modernising the infrastructure in Taunton and surrounding area to improve water quality. Around 50km of water mains will be replaced or repaired.
Speaking after public drop-in sessions, project manager Phil Luxton said: “It was quite clear that people understood why the work had to take place to improve water quality.
“We are working closely with Somerset Highways and other agencies in Taunton to coordinate the programme and ensure that minimal disruption is caused.”
