Pump manufacturer T-T Pumps has delivered hinged-flap valves for one of the largest flood protection schemes ever undertaken in the UK, the £12 million Arbroath Flood Protection Scheme. The firm said the tender was awarded on the strength of its understanding of the valve technology in question and its reputation for efficiency as a supplier.
Last year, the government published plans to bolster flood defences, including £5.2 billion earmarked to create around 2,000 new flood and coastal defences to better protect 336,000 properties in England by 2027. One of the largest of these is the Arbroath scheme. It will hold back flows in the catchment above Arbroath to reduce levels in Brothock Water, exceeding the capabilities of an earlier scheme constructed in 1987. It will protect more than 500 people and their properties, avoiding damage that costs the area on average £840,000 each year. The scheme is being delivered by SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency) and Arbroath (Brothock Water) Flood Protection Scheme.
One priority is managing water overflow safely and efficiently, and T-T Pumps was awarded the tender – to supply the required hinged valves – from the principal contractor Morrison Construction.
The double-hinged flap valve is a stock item that T-T is able to supply off the shelf. Peter Hindley, director of T-T Pumps, said the outpour specialists contracted by Morrison Construction had contacted them to request 62 valves. They needed a fast and efficient service as they were working to a deadline, and his firm’s ability to supply the valves without delay was clearly critical to the order.
T-T Pumps managing director Bob Nash says his firm offers a complete service, including installation when required, although the latter was unnecessary with the Arbroath project. Flood defence is an area of sales growth for the firm, he said. “Contractors understand that they need to purchase technology that is not just fit for purpose, but that also has longevity.” Flood defence projects have to deliver reliable protection for decades.
