Pollution prevention: Dealing with an emergency

Pump Supplies describes a recent emergency installation undertaken for a water industry client.

While our projects can often be months or even years in the planning, and we thrive where early contractor engagement is possible – along with all the other benefits of detailed long-term planning, we also pride ourselves on our ability to react very quickly to customer needs. Our fleet is deliberately maintained at around 50 to 60% utilisation to ensure that we always have enough equipment when required. These principles have been integral to our operations since our very first projects in 1982.

In early October, we received an urgent call from one of our water company clients at around 18:00 on a Thursday evening. The message was clear and pressing: “Help, we need this installing ASAP to avoid a total catastrophe!” The situation demanded immediate action to prevent a significant disruption and potential environmental impact.

Despite being over 100 miles from our nearest depot, our team mobilised swiftly. Within 18 hours, we had assembled a full installation team and coordinated the delivery of two articulated lorry loads of pumps, panels, and pipes to the site. This rapid deployment was crucial in addressing the emergency and preventing further escalation.

Installation and design
Upon arrival, our team worked tirelessly to install several hundred metres of pipe. We also designed the temporary pumping main in-house, which was a critical component of the project. Our design process identified the need for several air valves to ensure robust and efficient pumping throughout the job’s duration. This attention to detail and proactive problem-solving were key to the project’s success.

Environmental impact
Our swift and efficient response not only resolved the immediate crisis but also highlighted our commitment to helping water companies avoid pollution incidents. Water companies are often under significant scrutiny and rightly so, but it’s important to recognise the extensive efforts they make to protect the environment.

Pollution prevention is a top priority for water companies, as they strive to maintain high standards of water quality and environmental protection.

This project exemplifies our ability to respond rapidly and effectively to urgent client needs. Our team’s expertise and dedication ensured that the installation was completed swiftly and to the highest standards, preventing a potential catastrophe.
By partnering with us, water companies can be confident in our ability to support their environmental protection efforts. We are proud to contribute to their mission of maintaining clean and safe water systems, demonstrating that the industry is committed to safeguarding our natural resources.
