Over 3 million tonnes of office furniture is sent to landfill annually across the world, explains Recycle Scotland as it announces a fresh new look to reflect its ambitions of widening its ‘reuse first’ service.
Established in 2010, the firm’s primary work involves collecting and recycling unwanted office furniture to re-sell where possible and then recycling whatever component parts are left over.
Demand for its services has grown four-fold in the last four years and the fresh look is a bid to reflect the evolution from small-scale ‘pick-up’ service to a larger-scale reuse and refurbish specialist. At the forefront will be its ‘reuse’ service, wherein the organisation matches up businesses that have furniture to dispose of with those in need of furniture, particularly within the further and higher education sector.
Only 17% of disposed furniture is currently recycled in the UK, and the firm talks of the importance of a reusing and refurbishing ethos becoming the norm in office environments.
