Activist network turns attention to coal power plants

GREENPEACE has published a report titled ‘Silent killers – why Europe must replace coal power with green energy’, which cites research conducted at Stuttgart University in 2010, modelling the impact of coal power plants on human health.

The study indicated that coal power plants are one of the worst sources of toxic air pollution in the EU, killing around 22,000 people a year. The group is campaigning for coal-burning to reduce rapidly and for the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects to be brought forward.
It is also calling for all coal-powered power plants to be fitted with Best Available Control Technology, not just that which meets minimum regulatory standards.
