ON 5 November Vince Cable announced £67m of funding to support British inventors who want to turn their ideas into commercial products. Innovate UK, previously the Technology Strategy Board, will provide £50m to help bridge the “valley of death”- as the business secretary put it – the gap scientists observe between having an idea and launching a successful commercial product. A separate £17m pot will fund 210 industrial PhD placements.
