Wastewater treatment specialist Jacopa has successfully replaced the covers of an existing Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) at Frolesworth Sewage Treatment works in Leicestershire.

The old covers were in a poor state of repair and incorporated a sliding access system which made maintenance difficult. A new and more robust design capable of sustaining a high quality finish and giving easy, safe access with clearance for maintenance within the unit was therefore required. The site levels were also testing as the ground sloped significantly towards the final zone tank.

Jacopa successfully overcame all the challenges and installed new covers based on its own advanced design which incorporates access doors at both ends and base support channels to level the installation. Design, delivery and installation were all accomplished within an exacting time frame including dealing with the site offloading issues often experienced with this kind of project.

Jacopa Operations Manager, Mike Dale said: “By working closely with the customer from the outset and drawing on our long experience of the design, manufacture and installation of RBCs we were able to deliver an improved design which is efficient, robust and cost effective.”

Jacopa says it can expertly refurbish or repair plant supplied of any design and the company has developed a specialist procedure for the investigation and repair of RBC equipment. According to the firm, a dedicated team of mechanical, electrical and process technicians and engineers can assess all key components and ensure faulty items are replaced in a timely, cost effective manner, extending the life of the asset and often avoiding costly repairs such as total rotor replacement.

In addition to refurbishment, Jacopa manufactures its own advanced and attractively priced range of RBCs. “Both bespoke and standard range units are available,” says the firm, “all of which benefit from the operating experience gained from the company’s large number of installed units in the UK and Ireland. The equipment incorporates many significant design advantages and can be delivered fully off-site assembled saving many hours of installation.”
