CIRIA issues new SuDS construction guidance

Guidance on the construction of SuDS cover

Construction industry research organisation CIRIA published a new guidance document in December 2017, Guidance on the construction of SuDS (C768), intended to support and provide greater confidence to those designing, specifying and constructing SuDS.

Written by landscape architect Sue Ilman and chartered engineer Steve Wilson, the 285-page document divides into five sections: Introduction, Pre-construction, Construction planning and programming, Site management, Construction and inspecting SuDS, and Construction and inspection of SuDS components.

Early sections of the guide discuss the things to consider when planning and managing a site, moving on to discussing the construction of the different SuDS components using photographs of actual site works to illustrate both good practice and what can go wrong. Case studies are provided to show how others have achieved good construction or resolved problems. There are detailed sections looking at specific components such as green and blue roofs, infiltration systems, proprietary treatment systems, filter strips, swales and bioretention systems.

The guide complements CIRIA’s SuDS Manual (C753), published in 2015, and provides clear, practical advice, diagrams, case studies, checklists and photographs to illustrate challenges faced on site, as well as providing information on correct installation methods and work stages.

The updated Guidance on the construction of SuDS (C768) is collaboratively funded and free to download from the CIRIA website at www.ciria.org/C768.
