Precast storm tanks join AMP8 rollout

Water-management products manufacturer Marshalls Civils & Drainage has been appointed to a £6 million Severn Trent framework to supply precast concrete storm tanks as part of the water company’s AMP8 investment programme.

The company is one of four preferred suppliers selected for the framework, which will support upgrades intended to improve stormwater management and the resilience of wastewater networks across Severn Trent’s region.

Storm tanks provide temporary storage for excess flows during periods of heavy rainfall, helping wastewater networks and treatment facilities manage volumes that exceed their normal capacity.

The framework forms part of Severn Trent’s investment during AMP8, the five-year regulatory period running from 2025 to 2030.

Marshalls said it developed large-scale precast storm tank panel designs for the tender and is now working with Severn Trent’s design and sustainability teams on what it describes as “plug and play” stormwater solutions.

The company also considered ways of reducing the environmental impact of production and delivery, including optimisation of concrete mixes, manufacturing efficiencies and logistics. Its Pollington manufacturing facility in East Yorkshire will be the primary production site, supported by its Mells facility in Somerset.

Marshalls said the arrangement was intended to minimise transport distances and associated road miles, although no estimate of the resulting carbon savings was provided.

The contract was awarded following a three-stage procurement process covering pre-qualification, detailed design development and site assessment.

Euan MacKinnon, national sales director at Marshalls Civils & Drainage, described developing the new product type as a “monumental challenge”, involving technical, production, quality and sustainability teams across the company.

Following the storm tank award, Marshalls has also been appointed to Severn Trent’s wider precast supply framework.

AMP8 is expected to involve substantial investment across the water sector in additional wastewater treatment and storage capacity, driven in part by requirements to improve network resilience and reduce the environmental impact of storm overflows.
