Environmental consultancy Ecus has been commissioned by Network Rail to work on a project to renovate Barmouth Bridge in Wales.
The national company will provide multi-disciplinary environmental consultancy support for the multi-million pound renovation of this historical UK landmark.
The impressive Barmouth Bridge, also known as Barmouth Viaduct, is the longest timber viaduct in Wales and one of the oldest still in regular use in Britain, recently reaching its 150th anniversary. It is a Grade II* listed structure crossing the River Mawddach estuary, which is a European Designated Site for Nature Conservation.
Erica Kemp, managing director of Ecus said: “Since our beginnings over 30 years ago, we have worked on a vast array of projects but occasionally we have the opportunity to work on something very special and Barmouth Bridge is certainly one of those occasions.
“We are absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to use our expertise to help secure the future of this amazing structure for many years to come. Barmouth Bridge is not just visually impressive, it is also of great historic and cultural significance and a testament to Victorian engineering at its finest.
“Our specialist multi-disciplinary team will be managing the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process across overlapping planning jurisdictions including screening, scoping and coordination. We will also be managing other environmental consents and permits including Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA) and Marine Licence Applications.
“As holders of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment’s (IEMA) Environmental Impact Assessment quality mark, Ecus has the capability and experience to ensure that all of the environmental requirements are addressed effectively and appropriately.”
Early project development work is currently being undertaken to inform the start of the renovation work which is earmarked for Network Rail’s next control period, CP6, which runs from 2019 to 2024.
