Veolia wins LTP contract for first-of-a-kind Welsh energy park

Liquor Treatment Plant

Veolia Water Technologies (Veolia) has been awarded a contract to supply a Liquor Treatment Plant (LTP) at Dr Cymru Welsh Water’s Five Fords Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW). The utility is developing a sludge treatment centre with the help of Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB). Welsh Water, the only not-for-profit water company in England and Wales – is investing £35m to transform Five Fords into an energy park – said to be the first of its kind to incorporate solar, advanced AD and hydro generation at one site.

Owing to an increase in sludge throughput and the implementation of a THP plant, a new LTP is required to treat the centrate prior to return to the inlet of the WwTW.  Veolia’s solution is a HYBASTM (IFAS) ANITATM Mox plant. This process enables both aerobic nitritation and anoxic ammonia oxidation to take place on a one-stage biofilm process. HYBASTM (IFAS) technology using suspended carriers is a long proven application of the MBBR process. Applying the same concept to ANITA™ Mox has shown significant benefits.
