EMS began to install a new grit removal plant at Barnhurst STW for Severn Trent Water in May 2019 that was intended to replace six off conventional grit rakes (nodding donkeys) and a belt conveyor that transported the grit to the grit collection area.

EMS successfully installed three VRM270 grit pumps and two grit classifiers to remove the grit from the six off cross flow detritors. The system has now been fully commissioned and is currently in full operation. Pictured above are the grit classifiers and a grit pump that is pumping an impressive 70 metres to the classifiers. Each grit pump is de-gritting two detritors alternatively and is pumping at approximately 6 l/s, the grit pump is capable of pumping against a 50 Mtr head. Since installation grit removal has increased substantially.
