WORK is expected to begin in summer on a £154m project that will transform the way Scotland’s biggest city handles its domestic waste.
Approval for the plan marks a milestone in a partnership between Viridor and the city council to overhaul the way in which the city manages its domestic green bin residual waste over the next 25 years. It will also push Glasgow away from costly and unpopular landfill disposal.
The centre will have some of the most advanced technology across Europe and will operate a three-step process of a ‘smart’ materials recycling facility, anaerobic digestion to capture food and organic material and an advanced conversion facility to recover renewable energy from the post-recycling material that remains.
